After several years of visiting France for our holidays we were finding it a little awkward at the péage when using the autoroutes. With the ticket machine and the toll booth on the left hand side of the car, trying to get the car close enough for Carol to reach, the rigmarole of either taking a ticket at the beginning of the section or finding the ticket taken earlier (plus credit card or cash) and occasionally dropping things between car and toll booth, life could get quite interesting. Doing this several times over on one journey adds to the journey time, so in 2014 we took out a contract with Sanef. They have an office in England for customers in the U.K. and the website is in English (as opposed to the other providers that are wholly based in France, although Sanef’s charges are slightly higher). They send out a tag in the post, which you fit inside your car windscreen and charges are taken from your bank account – no need to stop!

The costs are in Euros and the exchange rate is worked out for you, plus any tax.
The costs at the time of writing, taken from the Sanef website, are:
20€ - refundable security deposit (noTVA*)
10€ - non-refundable application fee (+TVA*)
6€ - annual management fee (+TVA*)
5€ per month that the tag is used (but maximum of 10€ in any subscription year)
Pay in £ via direct debit (they use an average mid market exchange rate for the relevant month + 2% (less than bank/Credit card))
*TVA = VAT
The costs at the toll are still the same price whether or not you have a tag. To me this additional cost is well worth it. When I have been driving on the autoroutes in France I make a mental note when approaching the péage of the other vehicles that are passing me and see if they go to the payment booths and how long it takes for them to pass me again, because I have cruised though at the automatic booth.
