About Us
My name is Andrew, I am in my late fifties and I have been married to my lovely wife Carol for over 29 years. We have two sons, both in their mid twenties.
We have owned a caravan now for eleven years. Prior to having the caravan we would use a tent for our summer holidays as we didn’t have the have the funds to purchase, maintain and store a caravan. We don’t use our caravan as often as I would like but it gives me a lot of enjoyment when we do!
Carol and I are very passionate about France. Why? Well it is partly Carol’s fault as she trained to be a bilingual secretary so her French is very good and she started visiting France when she was 17. Carol is passionate about arts and culture, in particular music and art nouveau/deco. I am very grateful to her for introducing me to these as well.
Whereas for me my first visit to France was when I was 19 on a day trip to Paris to see Queen in concert; then I visited Brittany and Paris again 11 years later in 1993 with Carol.
A few years after my first trip to France I started training to be a Chef working in an up market French restaurant. During my two years of training I had a yearning to go to live and work in France as I thought that this would help me develop as a Chef! Alas it did not happen. My linguistic skills are very poor which is not helped by me having dyslexia. As a result of working in the catering trade I started to learn some French terminology and that different regions in France had a certain style of cuisine and as the years have progressed I have come to understand more as to why these variations take place, such as climate, geography and influences from neighbouring countries.
So having worked in the catering industry for many years I have become a lover of a wide range of good quality food and drink, especially wine, cheese and desserts, which the French are renowned for.
In 2006 we took our first Family holiday abroad to Alsace in northeast France where we stayed in a Gite in Merkwiller-Pechelbronn, and we all enjoyed it very much. In 2008 we followed it up with a similar visit to a Gite in Ribérac in the Dordogne - by now we were getting a taste for France.
In 2009 we managed to find the funds to get our first caravan; that year we managed a few trips away in it staying in England, but I was missing France so in 2010 we took the plunge and set off for France, towing our caravan behind the car. Oh boy, we were so ambitious! This time our aim was Avignon in the southeast in Provence, a distance of 610 miles from Calais. As it is so far we had an overnight stop but even with this it was is a big undertaking.
I hope you enjoy our website which documents a lot of our travels and other caravan-related matters.
